General Accounting Questions

Do I need an accountant?

While you can manage your own taxes, a professional accountant ensures you stay compliant, avoid costly HMRC penalties, and claim all eligible expenses. We save you time and provide peace of mind that your finances are handled correctly.

Do you work with sole traders and small businesses?

Yes, we specialise in supporting sole traders, small limited companies, and CIS contractors. Our services are designed to be simple, affordable, and jargon-free, making them perfect for smaller operations and independent professionals.

Do you only work with clients in Bradford?

While we are based in Bradford and love supporting local businesses in Baildon, Shipley, Leeds, and across West Yorkshire, we work with clients remotely all over the UK. Our digital-first approach means we can help you no matter where you are.

Do you offer fixed pricing?

Yes. We believe in transparency, so we offer fixed monthly pricing or clear flat fees for specific services like self-assessment. You’ll always know exactly what you’re paying with no hidden surprises or hourly billing traps.

Tax Returns, CIS & Bookkeeping

What is a Self-Assessment tax return?

A Self-Assessment tax return is the form you use to tell HMRC about your income and capital gains. HMRC uses this information to calculate how much Income Tax and National Insurance you need to pay. Most directors, sole traders, and people with untaxed income need to file one annually.

When is the tax return deadline?

For online submissions, the deadline is midnight on 31st January following the end of the tax year (which ends on 5th April). We recommend getting your records to us early to avoid the last-minute January rush and any potential late-filing penalties.

How does the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) work?

Under CIS, contractors must deduct money from a subcontractor’s payments and pass it to HMRC. These deductions count as advance payments towards the subcontractor’s tax and National Insurance. We help subcontractors claim back any overpaid tax and ensure contractors file their monthly returns correctly.

What bookkeeping services do you provide?

We offer digital bookkeeping using software like Xero, QuickBooks, and FreeAgent. We record your transactions, reconcile bank statements, and ensure your finances are organised throughout the year, making VAT and year-end accounts a much smoother process.

Can you help me with my VAT returns?

Yes. If your turnover exceeds the VAT threshold (currently £90,000), we can manage your VAT registration, calculate your liabilities, and submit your quarterly returns to HMRC through MTD-compatible software.

Making Tax Digital (MTD)

What is Making Tax Digital?

MTD is a government initiative to move the UK tax system fully online. It requires businesses and individuals to keep digital records and use 'functional compatible software' to submit their tax information. This is already mandatory for VAT and will expand to Income Tax in the coming years.

What software do you recommend for MTD?

We work with major platforms including Xero, QuickBooks, and FreeAgent (which is free for many business bank account holders). We can help you choose the best fit for your business and provide training to get you started.

Director Identity Verification

Why do company directors need to verify their identity?

New UK laws (via the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act) require all new and existing company directors and Persons with Significant Control (PSCs) to verify their identity with Companies House to prevent fraud and misuse of company structures.

How does your verification service work?

As an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), Accountancee can conduct the necessary identity checks on your behalf. We use a secure digital process that takes just a few minutes, after which we notify Companies House that you have been verified.

What documents do I need for verification?

Usually, a valid passport or UK driving licence and a proof of address (such as a utility bill or bank statement) are sufficient. Our digital system will guide you through capturing the images securely.

How long does verification take?

Once you’ve uploaded your documents and completed the biometric check, we typically process and confirm your verification the same day.

What happens if I don’t verify my identity?

Failing to verify can result in fines, criminal prosecution, or disqualification from acting as a company director. New directors will not be able to be appointed until they are verified.

Working With Accountancee

How do I switch accountants to Accountancee?

It’s very simple. You just tell your current accountant you’re moving, and we handle the rest. We’ll write to them to request your records and ensure a smooth handover with no disruption to your tax filings.

Why choose an AAT Licensed Accountant?

Accountancee is licensed and regulated by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT). This means we adhere to strict professional standards, maintain professional indemnity insurance, and are supervised for anti-money laundering compliance, giving you peace of mind.

What is your response time for queries?

We pride ourselves on being accessible. We aim to respond to all emails and phone calls the same day, so you’re never left waiting for answers when you need them most.

Can I pay for my accounting monthly?

Yes. Many of our clients prefer to spread the cost through a fixed monthly fee, which includes ongoing support and year-end submissions. This helps with your business cash flow and avoids large surprise bills.
